The famous Netflix live-action series One Piece has added new characters to its already stellar cast for the second season, Variety exclusively reports. Daniel Lasker (Raised by Wolves, Noughts & Crosses, Vagrant Queen) will portray Mr. 9, Camrus Johnson (Quiz Lady, Batwoman, Real Love) will play Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn (Warrior, Professionals, Lioness) is set to portray Miss Valentine and David Dastmalchian (Late Night With the Devil, Oppenheimer, Dune) will portray Mr. 3.
According to Variety, these four characters are taken from the anime and manga One Piece, created by Eiichiro Oda (One Piece Film: Gold, One Piece Film: Red, One Piece: Stampede). They are from the criminal crew named Baroque Works.
Netflix’s One Piece season one, according to Variety, included Iñaki Godoy (The Imperfects, MexZombies, Don’t Open the Door) as the main lead and captain of the Straw Hat crew Monkey D. Luffy, who aspires to become the king of pirates, alongside the other members of the crew, portrayed by Emily Rudd (Hunters, The Romanoffs, Fear Street: Part Two – 1978) as cunning navigator Nami, who secretly has a heart of gold, Mackenyu (Knights of the Zodiac, Pacific Rim: Uprising) as sword-master Roronoa Zoro, Jacob Romero (Blairsden, Grey’s Anatomy) as the timid yet courageous Usopp and Taz Skylar (The Reserves, Gassed Up, Multi-Facial) as the resourceful cook Sanji. This main cast has been confirmed to return for the upcoming second season.
The first season, according to Variety, was first released on Netflix, in Aug. 31, 2023, and received excellent praise from critics and fans alike for its accurate cast, similar to the anime.
According to Variety, here is the official synopsis of the live-action series, “Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, to become King of the Pirates! But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.”
According to Variety, the show was produced by Netflix, alongside the official manga publisher Shueisha, and Tomorrow Studios, an ITV Studios partner. Executive producers are Oda, Matt Owens (Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Joe Tracz (Dash & Lily, Percy Jackson and the Olympians), who are also the official co-showrunners of the series.
Furthermore, other producers include Tomorrow Studios’ Becky Clements (Physical, Snowpiercer) and Marty Adelstein (Made of Honor, Hanna), Chris Symes (Resident Evil, Hellboy II: The Golden Army), Tetsu Fujimura (Ghost in the Shell, Tekken, Blindness) and Steven Maeda (Lost, Day Break). According to Variety, Maeda was another one of the showrunners for season one but has stepped down from that role. As stated beforehand, the second season will now have Tracz as showrunner.
One Piece’s live-action first season is now available to stream on Netflix.
