Netflix’s first Arabic original thriller series Jinn brings a Middle Eastern legend to a present-day high school, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show follows group of Arab teens who encounter Jinn (supernatural spirits in Arabic mythology) during their trip to the ancient city of Petra. When the students return to their high school, they bring the ancient spirits with them, which turns school life into a “biblical battle of good versus evil.” Fortunately, a spirit who followed them may be able to save the students and the world.
“Set in modern Amman and ancient Petra, Jinn follows a group of Arab teenagers as their friendships and budding romances are tested when they unknowingly invite the supernatural forces of jinn into their world,” said Netflix.
“We aim to create a fantastical show about young people in the Middle East in Arabic that’s real, authentic and action-packed. This Netflix show will be full of intrigue, adventure and amazing storytelling from Jordan and for our audiences around the world,” stated Erik Barmack, VP of international original series at Netflix.
“This is a great opportunity to portray Arab youth in a very unique way. The level of authenticity Netflix is trying to achieve with this show is definitely what attracted me the most to be part of this project,” director Chaaya said.
The cast includes rising actors Hamza Abu Eqab, Salma Malhas, Sultan Alkhalil, Aysha Shahalthough, Yaser Al Hadi, and Ban Halaweh.
The series is produced by Kabreet Productions. Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya (Very Big Shot) serves as director and executive producer. Elan and Rajeev Dassani (SEAM, Scandal), executive produce together with Christian and Lucien. Elan Dassani also serves as head writer. Rajeev Dassani also contributed to the writing together with Amin Matalqa (Captain Abu Raed), who directs the remaining three episodes, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
The six-episode series is produced in Amman, Jordan, with one scene shot at the Unesco World Heritage Site of Petra. The series is set to premiere on June 13, 2019.
