According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix’s newest entry into the Young Adult genre, The Society, female-led take on the 1954 dystopian novel, Lord of the Flies, showcases teenage life. The show, created by showrunner Chris Keyser (Party of Five) and executive produced by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported into a different version of their wealthy New England town, West Ham, which looks almost identical except that they cannot find their parents. According to Marie Claire Netflix’s official descriptor says “as they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive.”
The official Netflix teaser begins with: “Mom, it’s me again. Where is everyone? It’s been nine days. We’re all alone. Some of us thought it would be fun to be in charge of ourselves. Things got bad,” Deadline reports. According to The Hollywood Reporter: “their newfound freedom will be fun … but it will also be very dangerous. This feels like the right time “to bring a more allegorical look at teenage life and how humanity can often be the first thing to get lost in a survival situation.”
Kathryn Newton plays Allie (Big Little Lies) and Rachel Keller plays Cassandra (Legion). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cast is made up of young women who will take the lead ‘when it comes to establishing ‘titular hierarchy.'” The first trailer is an introduction to the unusual setup with Allie reaching out to her missing mother “as the action cuts to the fun parties and freedom that the adult-free world offered up before the inevitable descent into power struggles, violence, and death.” According to Allie, “it’s only been nine days since the teens were left alone, so things have gone bad pretty quickly.”
The series will premiere May 10 on Netflix.
