According to CNET, Netflix has recently released an interview with beloved primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall (Jane’s Journey, The Last Tourist), which was filmed several months before her passing. The Netflix original Famous Last Words is a show based on a Danish series called The Last Word. The series consists of well-known figures being interviewed as their final goodbye after they die.
As per CNET, the series is hosted by Brad Falchuk (American Horror Story, American Horror Stories), a frequent collaborator with Ryan Murphy (The Beauty, Doctor Odyssey). Falchuk also serves as a co-producer along with Mikkel Bondesen, the original host of the Danish show. The series started of with Goodall’s episode, and The New York Times reports that at least three other interviews have been recorded and stored. Netflix plans not to reveal the other interviewees and all that is known is that many of them are in their 90s.
According to CNET, Goodall passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91. She died peacefully in her sleep in California while on a U.S. speaking tour.
As per CNET, the concept of the series may seem grim to many but Goodall’s interview serves its purpose as a celebration of life more than anything. Goodall’s demeanor during the interview is the epitome of calm and hope. During the interview, she gave a closing remark as she looked at the cameras and said, “I want to make sure that you all understand that every one of you has a role to play. You may not know it, you may not find it, but your life matters, and you are here for a reason.”
According to CNET, Falchuk explained that salaciousness or deathbed confessions are not the point. “It’s not to get them to say some secret about their lives that’s a big front-page New York Post story … It’s a service to these people to deliver their last words.” Famous Last Words is a unique business model. Episodes only air after the person has died, so no one can predict with any real certainty when the next episode will be released.
