Almost two years after it was announced that Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai would be renewed for second season, an announcement posted below on YouTube on August 21 reveals that the hit animated series is finally in production. According to an article on mxdwn, the series won Primetime Emmy Award in 2024 for Outstanding Animated Program, beating out acclaimed series such as The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers.

Blue Eye Samurai follows the story of Mizu, played by Maya Erskine (PEN15, Man Seeking Woman), a half-white half-Japanese warrior seeking revenge on four white men, one of whom is actually her father. Forced by her mother to conceal her true gender growing up, she maintains this disguise into her quest for vengeance after an upbringing rife with discrimination.

In the production announcement video above, co-creators Amber Noizumi (Hollywood First Look) and Michael Green (Logan, Alien: Covenant, Blade Runner 2049) provide a sneak peek into what the second season could entail. The first season ended with Mizu realizing she needed to travel to London to find two of the men she set out to kill, and the first look of the second season reveals that Mizu has broken in somewhere and is holding her sword, presumably to kill someone. While the audience will see some of their favorite characters return, Noizumi also confirms in the video that characters thought to have previously died might not actually be dead.

“There are also gonna be maybe some people you thought died who maybe are still alive,” she teases.

Fans can also look forward to a more action-packed season. Jane Wu (Mulan, Star Trek Beyond), executive producer of Blue Eye Samurai‘s second season, notes that production for the season includes “refining a live-action philosophy.”

“You have to get stunt people who know what they’re doing,” Wu says in the video.

All episodes of the first season of Blue Eye Samurai are available to stream on Netflix. The second season currently does not have a release date.

“This is a story that needs to be told, and animation happens to be a very good medium to tell the story,” executive producer Wu says in the video. “I can’t wait to share what we have in store for Blue Eye Samurai Season Two.”
