Finally, there seems to be light at the end of the dark tunnel for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender. According to Comic Book, the new Netflix live-action version of the hit show will reportedly begin filming this November.
It has been 13 years since Aang has graced television screens across the globe. Since Avatar: The Last Airbender aired its final episode in 2008, there has been a live-action movie, a comic book series, and a sequel show, The Legend of Korra. None have reached the level that the original show had gotten to with a cult-like fandom and even an Emmy win in 2007. When the Avatar: The Last Airbender reboot was announced by Netflix, it finally seemed that there was hope in a meaningful revitalization of an animated classic.
Sadly, there has been a multitude of setbacks and disappointing news for fans. For one, the show’s original creators, Michael Dante Dimartino (The Legend of Korra) and Bryan Konietzko (The Legend of Korra), had been slated to work on the project. It is always a good idea for the original creators to be part of an adaption, look no further than George R.R. Martin and Game of Thrones. When it was announced that the two had departed from the new series, some doubt began to form in some fans’ heads. Also, the news that Aang’s romantic interest in the show, Katara, was to be a lot older than Aang in the new series left fans a little perturbed.
Now it seems the live-action remake is getting its footing again. The new report from Hollywood North states that the show is set to begin filming this November in Vancouver with the hopes of wrapping up in May of 2022. The report also specifies that Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow) will be the showrunner. Although this has not been officially confirmed by Netflix, Kim has been repeatedly linked to the project.
With all that has been going on behind the camera of the new Avatar: The Last Airbender, it will be nice to have something happen in front of the camera. Although fans have been hesitant on the new show, the new announcement of progress in development of the show should give them hope for a solid remake.
