Following the announcement of a final film, Netflix and the BBC plan to continue the Peaky Blinders universe with a sequel series. According to Deadline, a two-season order has been placed with show creator Steven Knight (Serenity, House of Guinness) and EP Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Red Eye).
Deadline reports the new series will consist of two six-episode seasons, continuing the events of the film set to premiere next year. While no one has been cast, the series is set to follow a new generation of Shelbys.
Deadline supplied the official logline: Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel. In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.
“I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride,” Knight said in a statement via Deadline.
The original series followed Murphy and his gangster affiliates, running for six seasons from 2013 to 2022, according to Deadline. Its fourth season won the BAFTA for Best Drama Series. The show has since expanded its reach from novels to video games and even stage productions.
Along with Knight and Murphy, Deadline reports executive producers include Kudos’ Karen Wilson (Rogue Heroes, This Town) and Martin Haines (Roman Mysteries, This Town), Garrison Drama’s Jamie Glazebrook (Man Stroke Woman, The IT Crowd), and the BBC’s Jo McClellan (Reunion, The Tunnel). Netflix’s Mona Qureshi (Our Girl, Better) and Toby Bentley (National Treasure, Collateral) join them.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be embarking on a new chapter of Peaky Blinders with our wonderful partners at Kudos, Garrison Drama and the BBC,” Quershi said via Deadline. “There are few modern storytellers to match Steven Knight and we will be on the edge of our seats as he returns to the streets of Birmingham and to the next generation of the Shelby family. Along with our global audience, we are ready to be captivated anew!”
“Peaky Blinders is one of the most iconic, era-defining dramas of our time and Banijay UK is delighted to be helping to bring Steven Knight’s vision for the epic next chapters to life,” Banijay UK CEO, Patrick Holland stated to Deadline. “Made by a brilliant new production partnership, led by Karen Wilson at Kudos, with Jamie Glazebrook from Garrison Drama, the story of the next generation of Shelbys will grip Peaky fans old and new.”
According to Deadline, the new series will air on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix everywhere else.
“This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas. Steven has worked his magic once again and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham. We are delighted to be working with Kudos, Garrison Drama and Netflix on this epic show. There’s plenty of drama for Peaky fans to look forward to!”
