In order to combat illicit password-sharing among Netflix users, the streaming service will be launching a test in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru that will allow members who share their accounts with users outside their household do so “easily and securely, while also paying a bit more,” according to Variety. In these markets, the cost for adding a member outside the household will be 2380 CLP in Chile, $2.99 USD in Costa Rica and 7.9 PEN in Peru.
“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans,” Director of Product Innovation at Netflix Chengyi Long said, according to Variety. “While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”
The new feature will allow users with standard and premium plans to add accounts for up to two people outside the household for less than the cost of a regular Netflix plan. Even further, the streamer will also be testing the concept of subscribers being able to transfer user profiles to new accounts – making it easier for other users to pay for their own plans while also keeping their information safe.
In 2021, Netflix had 221.8 million total paying subscribers worldwide, with 34% of that in the U.S. and Canada.
