After Disney claimed all Marvel content for its new streaming service, Disney+, which is set to launch in November, Netflix slowly announced the cancellation of all Marvel shows on its streaming service. The streaming giant already announced the cancellation of their Marvel shows Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and The Punisher. However, one remains: Jessica Jones. The second season aired with much success and Netflix has officially teased the release of season 3 on its streamer, albeit the last season for the show.
“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Netflix announced. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others.”
Concerning their partnership with Marvel, Netflix also added that “We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”
Krysten Ritter will also direct an episode of Jessica Jones in her first directorial debut. “I am beyond thrilled to make my directorial debut on Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” said Ritter. “The entire crew and cast has become family to me, and I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to work with our incredible team in this new way. I am so grateful that Melissa Rosenberg, Jeph Loeb, Marvel, and Netflix entrusted me to take the reins.”
Although no official date has been announced, season 3 is expected to premiere some soon, as Marvel teased the new series on Twitter May 6th:
According to comicbook, Krysten Ritter explained the plot of season 3 during Comicpalooza 2018. “What I love so much about season one or season two were how deeply personal both storylines were, but different,” Ritter stated. “So I got to explore different things within her and in my performance, show new colours. I think season one and two, we really looked back at Jessica’s past. We looked at what made her as hardcore she is and how isolated [she is], and she’s learned a lot — I think especially in season two she’s learned a lot about herself. She has a lot to live up to, and I’m curious to see what she does next.”
The cast will include Krysten Ritter and Rachael Taylor, returning as the sisters Jessica and Patsy. However, David Tennant, who plays Kilgrave, announced that he would not return. According to Tennant, “I don’t really regard it as a cancellation so much as something having the life that it should have. Three seasons of that story is great. Rather than thinking of it as something that was cancelled, I think of it as something that had three seasons that will live in the memory.”
