Netflix Signs Overall Deal With ‘The Crown’ Creator, Could Potentially Exceed $100M

Earlier today, an exclusive report from Deadline revealed that 3 sources had told the television news outlet that Netflix would be signing a huge overall deal with Peter Morgan, the creator of the hit Netflix series The Crown. According to the article, the value of the deal “could potentially cross the $100M mark.”

Morgan’s work on The Crown in the past has been hugely successful for Netflix. Although Netflix has not agreed to release its viewership data until recently, current reports estimate that The Crown currently has about 7 million British viewers (the number of international viewers is unknown). The show also boasts an overall 90% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has won 2 Golden Globes and 8 Primetime Emmy Awards. An early review of the series from The Hollywood Reporter praised Morgan specifically for his writing on the show, describing how his style was the perfect fit for the story. “He’s writer who favors brainy intimacy, and even a royal wedding and coronation are negotiations of power.” The Crown is currently in production for its third and fourth seasons, and with this new overall deal with Morgan, Netflix is expected to renew the show for two more seasons after that.

Netflix’s deal with Morgan is the latest in a series of overall deals the streaming platform has recently been making to lock down its top content creators. Most notable of these huge deals was an overall deal with Stranger Things creators, the Duffer brothers, announced earlier this week. The announcement was followed by new teaser trailer for Season 4 of Stranger Things.

However, Netflix isn’t the only streaming television provider to be signing overall deals with prominent content creators. Just last week, Amazon Studios announced that they would be signing a $20 million overall deal with Phoebe Waller-Bridge following her appearance at this year’s Emmy Awards, where her original comedy series Fleabag earned 4 total awards.

Netflix has not yet announced the details of the expected overall deal with Peter Morgan. Season 3 of The Crown will premiere on November 17th of this year. You can watch the official trailer below.
