On May 15, Netflix released the official trailer for their new original series, Blood & Water, starring Ama Qamata (My Perfect Family) and introducing Khosi Ngema in her debut role, via Glamour. Set in South Africa at the prestigious Parkhurst College, the series follows Puleng Khumalo, played by Qamata, as she transfers schools in order to explore the mystery of her 17-year-old sister who was abducted at birth while simultaneously adjusting to life in new and unfamiliar territory, via Glamour. As she investigates her sister’s disappearance, Khumalo begins to suspect that one of her new classmates, played by Ngema, may be her sister.
In addition to Qamata and Ngema, Blood & Water will feature Gail Mabalane (The Wild), Thabang Molaba (Love), Dillon Windvogel (Bhai’s Cafe), Arno Greef (Binnelanders), and Greteli Fincham (Ekstra Medium). The series is Netflix’s second African original series to Queen Sono, starring Pearl Thusi (Catching Feelings), which was released in February and was just recently renewed for a second season in April, via UPI.
Blood & Water has already been compared to certain popular teen shows. It is described as maintaining the glitz and glam of Gossip Girl, the drama and mystery of Elite, and even the action of Riverdale. The series was directed by South African director Nosipho Dumiso (Nommer 37) and the six-episode first season will be available to stream on Netflix on May 20, according to UPI.
In the meantime, the season 1 trailer can be watched below.
