How unfortunate for Lemony Snicket, but fortunate for Netflix viewers. According to Entertainment Weekly, Netflix has given the A Series of Unfortunate Events series a premiere date that is perfect for the series. All of the episodes will be made available for streaming on Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 on the streaming giant.
Not only do fans of the book series have a premiere date for the show, but they also have the first teaser trailer from the show that Netflix released. The trailer shows Patrick Warburton, the famed comedy actor, as author Lemony Snicket, walking around the darkened set, warning viewers to not to watch the trailer as everyone who works on the set of the show is suffering from melancholy.
Of course, not everyone is suffering as viewers can hear Neil Patrick Harris (Count Olaf) in the background, singing about joy and happiness.
In addition to Warburton and Harris starring in the show, Malina Weissman will star as oldest sister Violet Baudelaire and Louis Hynes will star as middle child Klaus Baudelaire. Sunny Baudelaire, the infant sibling of Violet and Klaus, has not been cast and may likely be a computer animated baby as a way to keep her young throughout all the episodes of the show. Joan Cusack will star as Justice Strauss, K. Todd Freeman will star as Mr. Poe and Aasif Mandvi will star as Uncle Monty.
This isn’t the first time that A Series of Unfortunate Events has been adapted for people’s viewing pleasure. In 2004, a film version, which starred Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, was released nationwide in theaters and grossed over $200 million at the box office.
A Series of Unfortunate Events started back in 1999, when Daniel Handler, under the pen name Lemony Snicket, published the first of 13 books in the series, The Bad Beginning. The final book, The End, was published in 2006.
While the movie only focused on the first three books, Neil Patrick Harris said in an interview that there’s going to be two episodes dedicated to each book, allowing more of the plot details to be included in each of the episodes.
News of Netflix adapting the show came back in June 2015. The first season of the show will consist of eight episodes and they will all be released at once. Handler is credited with being an executive producer of the show
