Netflix Renews ‘The Night Agent’ For Season Two

Deadline reports that The Night Agent has been renewed by Netflix for a season two of ten episodes. The renewal comes just one day after Netflix released the series’ record-opening weekend viewership, making it one of the fastest renewal decisions for Netflix, which usually waits for the 28-day performance data on a series before deciding. The series is created by Shawn Ryan (Last Resort, The Shield) and comes from Sony Pictures Television.

The series debuted on March 23 and had 168.7 million viewes in its first few days available on Netflix, which is the third-best season one premiere of a Netflix original.

“The last week has been a whirlwind as we’ve finally been able to share The Night Agent with the world,” series creator, executive producer and showrunner Ryan told Deadline. “To see the tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix. We couldn’t be any prouder or more excited to get cracking on Season 2 to share the further adventures of Night Action with our newfound fans.”

The Night Agent is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk (Cold Barrel Zero, The 500) and follows a low-level FBI agent, Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso (The Big C: Hereafter, The Middle), working in the basement of the White House. He mans a phone that never rings until the night it does and sends him into a dangerous conspiracy that leads all the way to the Oval Office.

In an interview with Deadline last week, creator Ryan said the second season would answer the following questions: “What does it mean that Peter would be a night agent? Where is he going? Now that Rose is going back to California to try to restart her tech career, where does that leave Peter and Rose?”

In the same interview, Ryan said that the pitch to Netflix “was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story, and any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season. That was the original plan; I think it’s still a pretty solid plan.”

Ryan is showrunner and executive produver through his MiddKid Productions. Seth Gordon (Breaking In, Atypical) executive produces through his Exhibit A banner and directed the first episode of the series. Executive producers also include Project X’s Nicole Tossou (The Worst Best Man, The Night Agent), Paul Neinstein (Scream, Bed Rest), Jamie Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Scream), and William Sherak (Ready or Not, Daddy Day Camp), Sunset Lane Media’s David Beaubaire (Fatherhood, Dreamgirls), Exhibit A’s Julia Gunn (United We Fall, The Lost City), and MiddKid Production’s Marney Hochman (S.W.A.T., Timeless).

Along with Basso, the series stars Eve Harlow (The 100, Queen of the South), Luciane Buchanan (The New Legends of Monkey, Filthy Rich), and Sarah Desjardins (Riverdale, Impulse).
