With Netflix setting the axe to series after series (victims include The Get Down and Sense8, which was begrudgingly awarded a 2-hour special finale episode by Netflix post-cancellation after devoted backlash by fans) subscribers to the streaming service have been anxious to see what show might fall on the chopping block next. Luckily for new series Dear White People, Netflix has decided to award the show a second season, IndieWire reports.
Justin Simien, creator and writer of Dear White People, announced the renewal with some of the show’s cast members at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, LA. Critics and audiences alike celebrated Dear White People for its sharp humor mixed with timely social commentary. The series follows a group of students of color attending a fictional Ivy League School. The show offers a look at today’s political and social issues concerning race all while incorporating humor and romance.
Season 1 of Dear White People premiered this April and starred Logan Browning, Brandon Bell, Antoinette Robertson, Ashley Blaine Featherson, and DeRon Horton. Yvette Lee Bowser will return as showrunner while Simien will once again work as creator, writer, and executive producer. The show is based on Simien’s first feature film that went by the same name, which premiered last year at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim. Both the original film and Netflix series are inspired by Simien’s own experiences back when he attended Chapman University.
Production of Season 2 is expected to begin later this year. The next season is projected to be released some time in the spring of 2018. All episodes of Dear White People Season 1 can be viewed on Netflix.
