According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has renewed comedy series A Man on the Inside, starting Ted Danson (Cheers) for a second season. The series follows Danson, who plays Charles, a widower who becomes a private investigator. Created by Mike Schur (The Good Place, Parks and Recreation) and produced by Universal Television, it was renewed only weeks after its first season premiere on the streamer on November 21.

“We are thrilled to make another season of A Man on the Inside, starring young up-and-comer Ted Danson,” Schur said in a statement. “From our partners at Netflix and Universal TV to the writers, cast, and crew, it’s a truly exceptional team of talented and lovely people, with one notable exception (young up-and-comer Ted Danson, who’s kind of a nightmare).”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schur stated that he and his fellow writer had begun coming up with ideas for the second installment before the first season wrapped up. He expressed that although the case for Charles has concluded, “what you have at the end of the season is a 76-year-old man with a new lease on life and a new sense of purpose and a new kind of fledgling career as an undercover detective. … You have a lot of building blocks for future seasons.”

Shur said, “I told Netflix, I’ll do this forever if you want to keep paying me to write seasons of a show where Ted Danson is an undercover detective. I will sign up for this through 2050 if you let me.”

“A Man on the Inside found that sweet spot between funny, authentic and heartfelt, resonating across generations,” said Tracey Pakosta, vice president of comedy series at Netflix. “We are excited to continue this story with Mike, Ted, Universal Television and the entire team.”

Universal TV president Erin Underhill added, “A Man on the Inside is equal parts charming, emotional and funny with a brilliant cast that has made the first season such a delight.
