Netflix has announced the renewal of one of its comedy series Gentefied for a second season, according to Deadline. Created by Linda Yvette Chávez (Bonjour Star Wars) and Marvin Lemus (Vámonos), the series released its first season in February of 2020 consisting of ten thirty-minute-long episodes. The comedy series received critical acclaim particularly with its cast, perspectives on gentrification, and portrayal of Latinx experiences. The series was adapted by these two for Netflix from their original conception of the series under the same name that premiered during Sundance online in 2017.
Gentefied centers on the pursuit of the American Dream through the lens of three Mexican-American cousins living in a Los Angeles neighborhood. The comedy’s cast includes the likes of J.J. Soria (The Oath), Joaquín Cosío (Narcos: Mexico), Carlos Santos (Last Man on Earth), Karrie Martin (Creed II), Greg Ellis (24), Felipe Esparza (Last Comic Standing), and many more. Chávez and Lemus also executive produce in addition to Teri Weinberg (Ugly Betty), Kim Roth (Insomnia), Charles D. King (Sorry to Bother You, Fences), and America Ferrera (Superstore, Ugly Betty).
The second season of Gentefied will consist of eight episodes. There is no current set date for filming due to halted production amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in the meantime, the series’ cast and crew are to reunite alongside George Lopez (Rio) for a table read on Netflix is Joke Youtube Channel on May 20 in an effort to support a non-profit organization Proyecto Pastoral in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles.
