Netflix Orders & Casts ‘Pluto’ Anime Series Based on Japanese Manga

Deadline has reported that Netflix has ordered a Pluto anime series based on the acclaimed manga of the same name and produced by Tezuka Productions. The anime is set for release later this year and is also produced by Genco and animated by M2Studios. The manga series has received global praise and has won various awards such as the Tezuka Osamu Cultural prize.

The story of Pluto was adapted to the stage in 2015 and returned in 2018 when it toward Europe and Japan.

“I applaud the courage of everyone that has taken on the challenge of making an anime based on Pluto. I am excited about the birth of this new series to win over people’s hearts. I hope that now more than ever, Osamu Tezuka’s message reaches the world,” author Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boy, Monster Deluxe) told Deadline.

The series will highlight Pluto‘s anti-war themes and remind the audience that there is “suffering on both sides” according to co-author Takashi Nagasaki (Billy Bat, Master Keaton).

The manga is based on Tezuka’s Astro Boy arc from “The Greatest Robot on Earth” of 1963, created by Ursawa and Nagasaki.

The anime series will include Japanese voice actors such as Shinshu Fuji (Wave, Listen to Me!, The Deer King) as Gesicht, Yoko Hikasa (Summertime Rendering, High School Dxd) as Atom, and Minori Suzuki (Macross Delta, Black Summer) as Uran.
