Netflix Orders ‘Big Mouth’ Spinoff ‘Human Resources’

In a tweet on Thursday, writer, actor, and comedian Nick Kroll announced Human Resources, a new spinoff of his hit animated comedy Big Mouth. Set in the same universe as its parent show, the new series is described by deadline as workplace comedy that takes place in a world inhabited by monsters. Kroll’s tweet included a teaser trailer for the upcoming cartoon, which depicts a city in the clouds beyond a sign that reads “Human Resources: We Manage People.” Monsters can be seen walking and flying in the background as an unknown creature, whose back is to the camera, unfurls a pair of butterfly wings.

Human Resources comes as a part of a multi-year deal between Netflix and Brutus Pink, a production company run by Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, all of whom co-created and serve as joint showrunners on Big Mouth. The new series will also be helmed by the quartet of creatives. The deal also extends Big Mouth through season six and paves the way for a number of new television and film projects by the production house for Netflix.

Big Mouth centers on a group of teens grappling with the complex realities of puberty. In the world of the show, however, these realities manifest themselves in a very unique way: through supernatural creatures called “hormone monsters” that influence the actions of the show’s characters. At the end of season two, it is revealed that the hormone monsters come from a kind of alternate universe named Human Resources, which plays host to a number of magical monsters that govern all human emotion. Examples of such creatures include The Shame Wizard and The Depression Kitty. This world will be the setting for the show Human Resources.

Netflix has yet to announce a release date for Human Resources. Season three of Big Mouth debuts October 4th on the streaming service.
