Season one of the superhero drama Jupiter’s Legacy makes its Netflix debut on May 7, and Mark Millar (Kick-Ass), the author of the source material, is already hard at work on plotting his next few television projects, Deadline reports. Millar entered an exclusive adaptation deal with Netflix in 2017, the first byproducts of which were reportedly said to be two television series and three feature films, according to Deadline. The two shows turned out to be superhero epic Jupiter’s Legacy and teen horror series American Jesus, as reported by The Wrap.
On May 6, 2021, Millar authored a blog post for Netflix’s official website where he reported that development on American Jesus is proceeding as scheduled with the Gout brothers, Leopoldo (Molly’s Game) and Evarardo (Mars on National Geographic), at the helm as executive producers and showrunners. The show will allegedly feature dialogue in both English and Spanish, according to HN Entertainment.
Millar’s press dispatch also provided an update on Netflix’s series adaptation of his adult fantasy serial The Magic Order. Script development and pre-production on The Magic Order had allegedly occurred simultaneously in the Czech Republic during the autumn of 2020, which was allegedly when Netflix elected to pump the brakes on the project, as reported by Deadline. Millar recently reported that The Magic Order is back in the development stage at the streamer and conferences with the writing team are scheduled to resume in the near future. “Some time away has given us chance to come back with a completely fresh look at the material, and we should be getting into our new writers’ room very shortly,” he writes, via the Netflix blog.
Also in the works from the Scottish author are two additional Netflix shows, one live-action and the other animated. The yet-untitled live-action series would allegedly see Millar make his return to the espionage adventure genre, of which he has steered clear since his hit Kingsman series, according to his blog post. The half-hour animated program is based on the Super Crooks comic book series, which is Millar’s superpowered take on the heist genre, Deadline reports. It is being produced in collaboration with famed Japanese animation studio Bones Inc., who has been behind some of the most popular anime series of the past few years, such as My Hero Academia and Mob Psycho 100, via Millar’s blog post. A preview of the series will allegedly premiere as part of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, as reported by Deadline.
In a post on his Twitter, Millar explained that the Super Crooks anime combines the narrative that has already been told across the four issues of his original comic book with nine episodes’ worth of entirely new stories and characters designed by the comic’s original illustrator, Leinil Francis Yu (High Roads).
