Netflix is at it again: Ricky Gervais’ Derek will be added for streaming in the Fall

The date has been set for seven new Netflix exclusive episodes. Netflix has announced that actor/comedian Ricky Gervais’ original series Derek will be released for viewing in the Fall.

Netflix has several original series that are available only to Netflix members. These series are produced and then released all at once, and members can then watch the episodes at their leisure. Unlike Netflix’s other series (which include Hemlock Grove, Arrested Development, and Orange is the New Black), Derek has already aired on UK TV.

Gervais, originally known for his roll on the UK’s the Office, wrote, directed, produced and stars in Derek. Indiewire describes the show as a mix of drama and comedy. Gervais, whose humor is sometimes controversial, attempts to change gears. The series depicts a kind, childlike man played by Gervais himself. In an interview with Indiewire, Gervais mentions that he has received critiques on his choice to play someone who is mentally disabled. Gervais defends himself, saying that the show has the running theme of kindness.

In the same interview he revealed that the character Derek is one that he has had on his mind for over 10 years. He was not entirely sure what to do with the character, until he had an epiphany. The character works in a nursing home with his roommate and friend. Gervais has family who have worked in this field, and he has realized that a nursing home would be the best place to set a show starring his character idea, Derek.

According to Indiewire, Derek, produced by Gervais’ company Derek Productions Ltd, aired on channel 4 in the UK on April 12, 2012. All seven episodes will be released on Netflix on September 12.
