According to The Verge, Netflix announced it will no longer support second- and third-generation Apple TVs, effective after July 31st. The streaming giant communicated this change to customers via email, citing the need to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience.” This decision impacts devices that debuted over a decade ago, marking the end of an era for some Apple TV users.
As reported by The Verge, AppleInsider and MacRumors, have also confirmed the update and Netflix’s support page has been updated to reflect this change. Apple had already classified the first three generations of Apple TVs as “obsolete,” as the company generally discontinues service for products seven years after they cease to be sold.
The move is not unprecedented for Netflix, which has previously phased out support for older devices. According to The Verge, in 2019, the company discontinued support for certain older Samsung and Vizio smart TVs and first-generation Roku boxes. This transition was driven by a shift from Windows Media DRM to Microsoft’s PlayReady DRM, reflecting the ongoing need to adapt to evolving technology and security standards.
Although Netflix has not provided specific reasons for ending support for these Apple TV models, the absence of the App Store on these older devices likely played a significant role. Without the App Store, these Apple TVs cannot update to the latest Netflix app versions, which could hinder the streaming service from delivering an optimal user experience.
As The Verge mentioned, those impacted by this change, upgrading to a newer Apple TV model is recommended. Verizon is offering a $40 discount on the latest Apple TV 4K, providing an opportune moment for users to switch. As technology advances, companies like Netflix must balance the need to support older devices with the imperative to offer the best possible service. While this transition may inconvenience some users, it underscores Netflix’s commitment to innovation and quality in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
