Netflix dropped the trailer for season two of its live-action One Piece adaptation yesterday. The story is based on the number one-selling manga of all time and its subsequent anime. It follows Monkey D. Luffy, played by Inaki Godoy, who adorns his signature straw hat and hoists his Jolly Roger in search of the legendary treasure, The One Piece, picking up crew members along the way.
Season one of the live-action adaptation was received well by critics, scoring an 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Historically, live-action adaptations of anime have been met with ire from fans, but Netflix seems to have gotten this one right, with a 95 percent rating on the Rotten Tomatoes viewer-based metric, the Popcornmeter. According to The Wrap, the first season was Netflix’s most-viewed series in the second half of 2023, with 71.6 million views. The trailer also confirms that season three has been greenlit.
Season one covered the East Blue Saga, the period in which Luffy is making his way to pirate mecca, the Grand Line. Along the way, he picks up four new crewmates: Pirate Hunter Zoro played by Mackenyu (Pacifc Rim: Uprising, Knights Of The Zodiac), Cat Burglar Nami played by Emily Rudd (Delicious in Dungeon, Moonshot), the infamous liar Usopp played by Jacob Romero (Rap Sh!t, Grey’s Anatomy) and lastly, the Straw Hat’s chef Sanji played by Taz Skylar (Boiling Point, The Lazarus Project) . During this time, they encountered several worthy adversaries, including the Fishman Arlong, McKinley Blenner III (Eric, Zero Day), and Don Krieg, Milton Schorr (Redeeming Love, The Shakedown).
In Season Two, our crew makes it to the Grand Line. The stakes will only rise, and the enemies will only get stronger. One such enemy will be Captain Smoker, Callum Kerr (The Wheel Of Time, Virgin River) a Marine with a powerful Devil Fruit who smokes two cigars at once.
Fans will have to wait until 2026 to experience more of this adventure, with exact dates still to be disclosed.
