The first trailer for Netflix’s latest Marvel series, The Defenders, was released today. This morning, Vox reported on the highly anticipated trailer for The Defenders, which will bring together the four Marvel heroes that Netflix has developed individual series around in years past: Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
The trailer opens with Jessica Jones at a police station in cuffs being reamed out by Misty Knight (Simone Missick), a police investigator who originally appeared in last year’s Luke Cage. Just as their conversation gets heated, Matt Murdock burst in, only to be greeted by a stony, “Who the hell are you?” from Jessica Jones. Murdock swiftly declares himself as Jessica’s lawyer, and from there the trailer begins to show how the Defenders come together.
More previously introduced characters that make appearances in the trailer are Daredevil cast members Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), nurse and friend of Matt Murdock (who appears to introduce Luke Cage and Danny Rand in the trailer) and Stick (Scott Glenn), Murdock’s childhood mentor. Both Claire and Stick seem to serve as the Defenders “glue” of sorts, urging the four heroes to put their differences aside and fight together for the betterment of the city they all wish to protect.
Elodie Yung’s Daredevil character Elektra also pops up in the trailer. Elektra died back in Season 2 of Daredevil, but the Hand, a villainous ninja organization terrorizing the Defenders’ beloved New York, took her body in order to resurrect her as their personal puppet to complete whatever dark deeds they tell her to do. Several quick scenes in the trailer show Elektra battling members of the Defenders, which confirms that Elektra will be fighting under the Hand. From the trailer, Sigourney Weaver’s villainous character Alexandra seems to be associated with the Hand as well, and it appears that she will be the main antagonist for the Defenders in the series.
Other characters set to appear in the series but who did not make an appearance in this trailer are Foggy Nelson (played by Elden Henson), Matt Murdock’s ex-law partner, and Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor), Jessica Jones’ best friend. Though the trailer didn’t reveal too much concrete information concerning the details of the show’s plot, in the trailer, Stick summarizes what lies at the heart of The Defenders the best: “You four: the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, the smartass detective, the righteous ex-con, and the kid with the glowing fist – the war for New York is here. So get your shit together.”
All episodes of The Defenders will premiere August 18th on Netflix.
