The duo behind the Sundance festival darling Gente-fied: The Digital Series is headed to Netflix. According to Deadline, Marvin Lemus (writer, Gentefied) and Linda Yvette Chávez (producer, Gentefied) have adapted their digital television series into a dramedy for Netflix titled Gentefied.
Gentefied, which premiered on the streaming platform in 2020, follows three Mexican-American cousins living in Los Angeles as they each strive to achieve their own versions of the American Dream and avoid the consequences that accompany their ambitions and aspirations. According to Deadline, the half-hour dramedy is described as a “badass bilingual series” that focuses on family and community, as well as the things that threaten them.
It has been announced that Clarissa Thibeaux (Runaways), Manuel Uriza (Rambo: Last Blood), Ivana Rojas (Sneakerheads) and Melinna Bobadilla (Orange is the New Black) are joining Gentefied as recurring cast members, via Deadline. Thibeaux is set to play Bree Solano, a charming, queer advertising executive who’s influence allows her to reign supreme in any boardroom meeting. Uriza will star as Ernesto Morales, the son of Pop, the “personification of the American Dream” (Deadline). Rojas will play Sarai Damian, a no-nonsense aspiring chef whose ambitions are set to destroy any obstacles standing in her way. Finally, Bobadilla is set to portray Melinna Barragan, a non-profit lawyer who fights for her clients as strongly as she loves her family. In addition to the new cast announcements, Gentefied stars Karrie Martin (The Purge TV Series), JJ Soria (Crank: High Voltage), Carlos Santos (The Last Man on Earth), and Joaquín Cosio (Quantum of Solace).
Gentefied is executive produced by Lemus and Chávez through their production company, Macro, alongside Charles D. King (producer, Mudbound) and Marta Fernandez (executive producer, Gentefied). Also attached as producers are America Ferrera (actress and producer, Superstore), Teri Weinberg (producer, Ugly Betty), Kim Roth (producer, Inside Man) and Aaliyah Williams (executive producer, Gente-fied: The Digital Series), via Deadline.
