Netflix Develops ‘Gods & Heroes’ Anime Based on Greek Mythology

Via Deadline, Netflix has reportedly ordered eight episodes for an anime series titled Gods & Heroes, which is slated for a 2020 release. The series, which will take place at the epicenter of Greek mythology, will feature the voices of Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife), Jason O’Mara (The Man In The High Castle) and Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley), as a variety of gods, goddesses, and demi-gods. While other voices include: Derek Phillips, Jessica Henwick, Melina Kanakaredes, Claudia Christian and Elias Toufexis.

Series’ co-creators Charley and Vlas Parlapanides (Immortals), wrote an original story involving one of Zeus’ illegitimate children, a young unknown demigod who is tasked with saving heaven and earth despite the interference of Hera and her monstrous forces — a common theme usually present throughout other Greek myths. The Parlapanides will also serve as writers and executive producers on the anime, while Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania and Seis Manos) will be leading the series’ animation development and creation.

“In Gods & Heroes we wanted to tell a wholly original story set in the beloved world of Greek mythology,” creators Vlas and Charley Parlapanides mentioned in a statement. “We are thankful for such an amazing cast and for such great creative partners at Netflix and Powerhouse Animation, who continue to push the envelope and expand the anime genre in a manner we had only dreamed of.”

This new content, will be the start of deals Netflix signed with animation houses: Anima, Sublimation, and David Production, and also the streaming giant’s previous deal with the infamous Production I.G, last year. With the previously announced Altered Carbon: Resleeved in production from Anima, which is based on Netflix’s original live-action science-fiction series of the same name.

Both, add to Netflix’s increasing anime slate including: Castlevania, Devilman Crybaby, Godzilla: The Planet Eater, Baki, Violet Evergarden, B: The Beginning, Aggretsuko, and The Seven Deadly Sins. Upcoming titles include Pacific Rim, Altered Carbon, Yasuke, Ghost in the Shell, and Trese.

John Derderian, Director of Anime for Netflix, has praised the Parlapanides efforts and mentioned they  “have an outstanding track record of telling gripping stories set in fantastical worlds and we are thrilled to bring their unique vision for the Gods of Mount Olympus to Netflix members around the world.”
