According to Deadline, The Midnight Club was canceled by Netflix after only one season. Showrunner Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House), who recently signed deal with Amazon Studios along with co-creator Trevor Macy (Oculus, Doctor Sleep), reveals what he had in store for the second season.
The Midnight Club dropped on Netflix in early October and was immensely popular among young audiences. Based on a book of the same name by Christopher Pike (Remember Me, Whisper of Death), the ten-episode debut followed a group of teenagers with terminal medical conditions at Brightcliffe Hospice who gather at midnight to tell each other horror stories.
Flanagan, who runs the production company Intrepid Pictures with Macy, is known for his work directing and executive producing several horror films and television series. Upon the announcement of The Midnight Club’s cancellation, Flanagan posted a tweet on Twitter describing his disappointment with the news and linking a Tumblr post where he reveals all the answers to the mysteries of season one and the plot of season two.
Via the Tumblr post, he writes: “I’m very disappointed that Netflix has decided not to pursue a second season of The Midnight Club. My biggest disappointment is that we left so many story threads open, holding them back for the hypothetical second season, which is always a gamble. So I’m writing this blog as our official second season, so you can know what might have been, learn the fates of your favorite characters, and know the answers to those dangling story threads from the first season.”
Flanagan describes how and when each character of the group would die and how they would live on through the stories that the remaining characters tell the new patients. Flanagan answers the biggest cliffhangers of season one – who is Dr. Stanton, really? What is the Shadow? How do the Mirror Man and the Cataract Woman tie into the show?
Flanagan’s last Netflix project, The Fall of The House of Usher, is expected to premiere in 2023.
