According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has just canceled the supernatural occult series Dead Boy Detectives. The series, originally set up to premiere on Max, has been canceled by Netflix after its first season premiered on April 25, only four months after releasing its first season with a total of eight episodes.
Dead Boy Detectives is set in the same fictional universe as The Sandman. The series comes from Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions and was originally set up to be on the Max streaming service, which ordered the series in 2021. Additionally, the series was based on the comics of Neil Gaiman (Good Omens) and Matt Wagner (Grendel) and later moved to Netflix in February 2023
The series focuses on the ghost characters of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, who created the Dead Boy Detective Agency.
The cast of the series includes George Rexstrew (Steve Varley Show, In Creative Company) as Edwin Payne, Jayden Revri (The Lodge, Fate: The Winx Saga) as Charles Rowland, Kassius Nelson (Re-Live, Last Night in Soho) as Crystal Palace, Briana Cuoco (Harley Quinn, The Flight Attendant) as Jenny Green, Ruth Connell (Doom Patrol, The Winchesters) as Night Nurse, Yuyu Kitamura (Staying Afloat, The Lamp) as Niko Sasaki, Jenn Lyon (ClearMind, Darla in Space) as Esther Finch, David Lacono (Fresh Kills, City on a Hill) as David the Demon, Joshua Colley (Peter Rabbit, Senior Year) as Monty and many others.
Steve Yockey (Supernatural) worked at Max developing the series before the switch to Netflix and stayed on when it switched platforms. He served as co-showrunner along with Beth Schwartz (Arrow), and both served as executive producers with Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon), Jeremy Carver (Being Human), Sarah Schechter (Atlas), Leigh London Redman (Found) and Gaiman.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the series spent three weeks, on Netflix’s top 10 for English-language series. Dead Boy Detectives racked up 9.6 million views during the three weeks and it ranked among Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series twice following its premiere.
