Netflix has canceled the family dramedy series, Gentefied, after two seasons, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series centered on the life and times of Latinx family and the restaurant they owned in southern California. The second season debuted on November 19 of last year.
Created by Linda Yvette Chavez and Marvin Lemus (Dear White People), Gentefied is based on the web series that Chavez and Lemus premiered at Sundance in 2017. The series followed the lives of three Mexican American cousins, all vying to etch their path to ideate their own American Dream. But at every turn, their dreams are deferred by systems out of their control. The series explored themes of gentrification, queer identity within a marginalized community, immigration, and class.
The show starred Karrie Martin (The Tax Collector, Dawning of the Dead), J.J. Soria (Camp X-Ray, John Henry), and Carlos Santos (Vacation Friends, Ghost Team One) as the three adult cousins, Anna, Erik, and Chris Morales, respectively. The three reunite to assist their grandfather, played by Joaquin Cosio (Hell, Narcos: Mexico) in managing the family taco shop. Although the three had very different personalities and goals, which would sometimes cause them to clash, they all agreed on making sure their family and the long-time business stayed afloat. Even if the neighborhood around them changed.
According to THR, Chavez posted her thoughts about the cancellation on Twitter.
In her statement, Chavez wrote: “In a world where revolutionary art is commodified we have to rethink the way in which we value it. Metrics and algorithms will never measure the true impact of what we did here.” Chavez went on thanking the viewers who not only supported the show but throughout its tenure, sent her messages of how the series “impacted your lives, how it made you feel seen, how it brought you closer to your families, how it filled your hearts with courage.”
Chavez and Lemus served as executive producers along with America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, Superstore), Kim Roth (Mudbound, Really Love), Charles D. King (Farewell Amor, Blast Beat), and Teri Weinberg (Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story, Killing Lincoln). Both seasons are available to stream on Netflix.
