It was recently announced by Netflix that Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club, Mud) will be voicing the iconic popstar for Agent Elvis via. Deadline. It is an adult animated series where the King of Rock‘n’roll goes on secret missions during the night. From Netflix’s description, “Elvis trades in his jumpsuit for a jetpack when he joins a secret government spy program to help battle the dark forces that threaten the country.”
The idea for the show came from Elvis’ ex-wife, Priscilla Presley (The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, The Smell of Fear) in collaboration with Rock singer John Eddie via. Deadline. Along with Eddie, Mike Arnold (The Litigator, Homeschooled) would be the co-showrunner and executive producer along with McConaughey himself. Priscilla first brought the idea to Netflix a couple of years back when the streaming platform announced it in 2019 with the working title, Agent King.
According to Deadline, other producers for the show include Kevin Noel (Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Valkyrie), Chris Prynoski (The Legend of Vox Machina, Motorcity), Shannon Prynoski (Her, Big Mouth), Antonio Canobbio (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Niko and the Sword of Light), Ben Kalina (Big Mouth, The Midnight Gospel), Jamie Salter (Elvis Presley: The Searcher, What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali), Corey Salter (What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali, Room 205), and Marc Rosen (Elvis Comeback: Theatrical Event, What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali). Fletcher Moules (Entergalactic, Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace) would also join as co-executive producer and supervising director.
According to Netflix, the show is slated for a 10-episode release in March of 2023, and would be produced by Sony Pictures Animation in collaboration with Authentic Brands Group and Titmouse. Gary Ye (Cleopatra in Space, Devil May Care) will be Supervising Director, and Josue Sanchez (Yukon Harvest, My Outdoor Family) is the Editor. Robert Valley (Love, Death, and Robots, Invincible) created original character designs, and Agent Elvis’ wardrobe was designed by John Varvatos (Unknown, Women Who Rock). Music and original score were composed by Tyler Bates (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2) and Timothy Williams (Get Out, Guardians of the Galaxy).
The teaser trailer released on Monday and at the time of writing has 18+ thousand views, 1.7k likes, and 252 comments on YouTube. In the trailer, it starts off with McConaughey’s voice saying, “Every once in a while, man accomplishes the impossible. All it takes is someone with a dream.”
The series is marketed as an “irrelevant action comedy” and with its stylistic animation style and its quick witty humor, many are getting geared to watch this adventure while nodding their heads to classic rock. Some liken its style to that of Archer and The Venture Bros. Both very well received and acclaimed adult animated comedies from Cartoon Network, and viewers are starting to take notice.
