Stranger Things is coming back for fourth season. The news was accompanied by a new teaser trailer, in which the words “Stranger Things 4” are depicted in the show’s iconic title font. The setting quickly shifts to the mysterious and sinister Upside Down, where the title is soon overtaken by the organic tendrils of the Mind Flayer — the monster at the center of the show’s conflict. As the screen goes black, the words “we’re not in Hawkins anymore” appear in reference to the show’s setting in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The new season comes in conjunction with a new overall deal for Matt and Ross Duffer, the pair of brothers that created the show.
Stranger Things is set in a small town in the 1980’s where a secret government project opens up a portal to a malevolent parallel dimension called the Upside Down. The operation is exposed when Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a young girl with telekinetic powers, escapes from a black ops base and encounters a group of four boys (Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, and Gaten Matarazzo) who help her hide and adapt to society after years of isolation. In an homage to a bygone era of sci-fi cinema, Eleven must team up with her new friends to stop a swarm of trans-dimensional creatures, while also fending off the power-mad humans who seek to harness the Upside Down’s unfathomable power.
It is currently unknown how long Stranger Things will run. Per the Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers have alluded to a finite run for the series, with an expectation that it would last four to six seasons. While there has been no mention that the upcoming fourth season will be its last, a quote from Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos signaled that the new overall deal for the Duffers was largely tied to endeavors beyond Stranger Things.
“The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with Stranger Things and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love,” said Sarandos, “We can’t wait to see what The Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of The Upside Down.”
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for season four of Stranger Things.
