Netflix Announces ‘Squid Game’ Season Two Premiere Date

Netflix released a short promo teasing the return of the worldwide phenomenon Squid Game. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second season will premiere on December 26, 2024. The trailer also projected the show’s future, revealing that its third season will close out the series. The third season is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2025.

Squid Game took the world by storm during its original release, taking the spot “as the most-watched series – English or non-English language – in Netflix history accumulating an insane 1.65 billion views within its first 28 days of release,” according to mxdwn. After the show’s huge success, it wasn’t long before creator Hwang Dong-hyuk (The Fortress, Silenced) announced its second season back in 2022. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix may be hoping to strategically repeat the show’s original streaming success, as December 26 typically has a higher influx of streaming viewing, being the day after Christmas.

In Squid Game season one, protagonist Seong Gi-hun is thrown into a dark game of competing for money after accepting an ominous invitation in the hopes of clearing his large amount of debt. In deadly trials against other desperate individuals, “the allure of a massive cash prize is [soon] overshadowed by the deadly consequences of losing,” as per mxdwn.

As for what to expect in season two, Hwang shared that “Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three, which will be brought to you next year,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

Returning cast members for season two will include Lee Jung-jae (The Acolyte, Hunt), Wi Ha-jun (Bad and Crazy, Romance is a Bonus Book), Gong Yoo (Train to Busan, The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince) and Lee Byung-hun (A Bittersweet Life, I Saw the Devil), via The Hollywood Reporter.

Squid Game season one is available exclusively on Netflix for those who want to catch up on the thriller before the second season releases.
