The third season of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None will be released in May, according to a tweet from Netflix’s Twitter account and Variety. A specific premiere date was not included for the new season, which arrives after a four-year hiatus.
Variety reports that the upcoming season is believed to revolve around Lena Waithe’s character, Denise. Denise was the focus of the season two episode “Thanksgiving”, which was standout for the series and won Waithe (Westworld) and Ansari (Parks and Recreation) an Emmy Award for outstanding comedy writing. Earlier this year, Ansari hinted that the long-awaited third season would be set in London.
The first season of Master of None premiered in 2015, with season two arriving two years later in 2017. In January 2018, Ansari was accused of allegedly being overly aggressive on a date and allegedly pressuring a woman into sex via an article published on the website babe.net, according to Variety.
The accusation put Ansari at the center of media debate about #MeToo allegations. Some argued that the story’s “sloppy reporting obscured the real issues at its core about consent and dating,” according to Variety. Other pundits called it an overreach of the #MeToo movement, describing the incident as simply a bad date.
Ansari later moved to London and has been maintaining a low profile, according to Variety. In 2019, he released a Netflix special Right Now, which tackled the sexual misconduct allegation directly. “There’s times I felt scared,” Ansari said in the special. “There’s times I felt humiliated. There’s times I felt embarrassed. And ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way.”
