According to Deadline, one of the most popular video game franchises Devil May Cry is getting an anime adaptation on Netflix. This adaptation is being produced by showrunner Adi Shankar who is known for other Netflix animated series such as Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne. Netflix has ordered a total of eight episodes from Studio Mir.
Below is the official announcement of the series by Netflix.
The same as Castlevania, Devil May Cry is based on a popular selling video game franchise. The series was released in 2001 by Capcom. The game franchise currently has a total of six game entries which includes Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, Devil May Cry 4, Devil May Cry 5, and DMC: Devil May Cry.
The series centers around the protagonist Dante who was born to Sparda, a legendary demon, and their human mom Eva. Dante sets out on a journey to avenge his murdered mother, killing every demon he sees. Through his journey, he finds and is challenged by his twin brother Virgil who Dante had believed to be dead.
According to Deadline, the animated series will follow the story of the games as sinister forces attempt to open up a portal between the human and demon realms. Dante, now an orphan, becomes a demon hunter for hire, not knowing that the weight of the world hangs in his hands.
According to Deadline, Shankar will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside Capcom’s Hideaki Itsuno (Dragon’s Dogma) and Studio Mir’s Seung Wook Lee (Fourth Place). Alex Larsen (Yasuke) will write the series.
Shankar says, “I’m honored that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the Devil May Cry franchise. Alex Larsen and I love these characters, we are part of the fandom, and vow to surpass the exceptionally high bar we set for ourselves.”
