Netflix announced that The Lincoln Lawyer spinoff is moving quickly through development as its parent series nears its end, according to Deadline. In May, Netflix announced that The Lincoln Lawyer will end after its upcoming fifth season, after a highly successful run.
Cobie Smulders (Dexter, How I Met Your Mother) will play the leading role as Artemisia “Emi” Finch, the half-sister of The Lincoln Lawyer protagonist, Mickey Haller, played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Pedro Páramo, 6 Underground).
The show will be written by The Lincoln Lawyer executive producers Ted Humphrey (Thick as Thieves, Wisdom of the Crowd), Dailyn Rodriguez (Queen of the South, The Night Shift), and Matthew J. Lieberman (The Christmas Chronicles 2, Free Guy), and produced by A+E Studios (Parish, UnREAL). Additionally, the project is intended to be filmed in Los Angeles due to the possibility of a tax incentive.
The Lincoln Lawyer is based on a book of the same name written by Michael Connelly (The Dark Hours, The Poet). The series follows criminal defense lawyer Mickey Haller as he takes on unfinished cases started by his late colleague, Jerry Vincent. The name comes from the fact that Haller drives a Lincoln as he fights for justice. However, the character of Emi is unique to the Television Series.
In season four, Emi makes her first appearance as a tease for a much larger role in season five. According to Deadline, her introduction is a shock to Mickey, who was completely unaware of her existence. When Emi comes to Mickey begging for him to represent a woman who was wrongfully convicted, he agrees to take the case, continuing his pledge to justice.
Deadline reports that her character will introduce a family dynamic, an aspect that has previously been missing from the show. In Connelly’s book, Mickey had a half-brother, Harry Bosch, but the character could not be featured in the series because of Amazon’s ownership of Bosch.
Netflix has not yet announced the release date for the fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer or the release date and title of its spinoff. You can stream the first four seasons on Netflix.
