According to Deadline, Netflix is remaining in the Wednesday game, as it has renewed this supernatural comedy series for a third season. This Addams Family reimagining stars Jenna Ortega (The Fallout, Scream) and is executive produced by Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands).
Plans are also in the works for a series spin-off, created by Miles Millar (Aquaman, Shanghai Knights) and Alfred Gough (Into the Badlands, Aquaman), as mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter.
News of this series renewal comes ahead of the Season Two launch, coming on Netflix on August 6, and following Season One’s success with becoming the most-watched original series ever on the streamer, garnering more than 250 million views. Furthermore, Wednesday received 12 Emmy nominations, including for Ortega, who received Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, making the show a major hit, Deadline notes.
Ortega plays the titular Wednesday, who is sent to a private academy for outcasts following her expulsion from her school. Other stars include Emma Myers (Girl in the Basement, Family Switch), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, The Sandman), and Riki Lindhome (Hell Baby, Another Period). Wednesday has also made stars, such as Myers, who leads Netflix and the BBC’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Deadline adds.
Season Two series regulars include Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago, Entrapment), Isaac Ordonez (A Wrinkle in Time, 7th & Union), Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo (Femme, The Magic Flute), and Luis Guzman (Havoc, Carlito’s Way). Netflix added Steve Buscemi (Fargo, Grown Ups), Owen Painter (The Handmaid’s Tale, Tiny Beautiful Things), Billie Piper (Scoop, Doctor Who), Noah Taylor (Shine, Submarine), and Evie Templeton (Pinocchio, Return to Silent Hill) to the cast, Deadline states.
THR was told by Ortega and Burton that a Wednesday spinoff is in the works, meanwhile the details remain top secret.
Deadline included a statement from showrunners, creators, and writers, Millar and Gough: “It’s been a dark delight to watch Wednesday cast her spell over audiences across the globe — one deadpan quip at a time. We’re beyond thrilled she’ll be returning to stalk the halls of Nevermore in Season 3. This time, she’ll unearth more of the school’s sinister secrets — and descend even deeper into the Addams family crypt. Or, as Wednesday would say: ‘Nothing brings a family together like a good exhumation,’”
Gough stated: “Television has — and always will be — a team sport. Miles and I have been doing this long enough to know that shows like this don’t come along every day. It’s such an alchemy of writing, directing, acting, crew, streamer, studio, and fans. We remain grateful and excited to continue this journey and tell these stories with all of our partners,” Deadline adds.
He also added that the “goal for Season 3 is the same as it is for every season: to make it the best season of Wednesday we possibly can,” Deadline mentions.
