Season three of This Is Us will share four more episodes with its fans while the season wraps up on some major plots and timeline questions. Showrunner Dan Fogelman and his writers are already working through some stories for season four. Although a renewal has not been confirmed yet, it is expected.
During the course of this season, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) relationship was put to the test when Randall announced he would be running for a seat in the Philadelphia City Council. With most of his time spent in Philadelphia, the two built up on passive aggressive conversations until it ultimately led to an outburst.
However, we finally saw the couple patch things up before Randall won the election. It seemed like they had finally conquered their biggest fight yet that is until Beth decided to start teaching ballet. Once Randall takes office as a city councilman and Beth becomes occupied with her classes, their hectic schedule requires a nanny – a very expensive nanny that they can’t afford at the moment. Fans took a collective gasp when Randall told Beth that she should put teaching on hold and look after the kids.
Randall is usually known as the man who can find a solution to any problem, but his suggestion was the problem. Throughout the next few episodes, the show will delve deeper into Randall and Beth’s relationship as they juggle through their marital issues.
“We’ll see their first date, we’ll see some big moments in their marriage,” co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker told THR. “We’re just trying to play with the format and the structure of the show and find new ways to tell a story.”
Another thing the show will focus on is the timeline and how it’s affecting the Big Three. Fogelman wants to shift the narrative on other characters in the show and develop more outgoing stories.
“But we’re breaking that mold more and more and finding that our audience will go with it, whether it’s a story of exploring the three kids going to find their uncle butted up against Milo going to find his brother in the same location; …or Beth’s episode; or [the upcoming Randall and Beth episode],” said Fogelman. “We have episodes coming in prominent locations of our next two seasons that will barely involve any of our main characters. And so for us, it’s not about trying to be different or trying to be interesting. Network TV and television in general, when you’ve been on as long as we have it can get a little expected. And what we like doing is making sure that people are still paying attention.”
Watch This Is Us on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. The season finale will air on April 2.
