According to Deadline, NBCUniversal and YouTube TV have initiated a short-term extension as negotiations continue for a new carriage agreement. The company’s current agreement was set to expire on September 30, 2023.
Deadline has reported that YouTube TV issued a statement regarding the deal and ongoing negotiations. “We’ve reached a short-term extension to avoid disruption to our service while we work toward a new agreement with NBCUniversal. We appreciate our subscribers’ patience while we negotiate on their behalf.”
According to Deadline, TelevisaUnivision was unfortunately unable to come to a compromise with YouTube TV, and programming is currently dark. Disney and ESPN’s deal is set to expire in several weeks, and talks are already underway.
Deadline has reported that carriage disputes are commonplace within the television industry, although YouTube TV is a non-traditional provider. YouTube TV recently surpassed the ten million subscriber mark in an astonishingly short period, just eight years after its launch. As consumers continue to shift to streaming platforms, YouTube is uniquely positioned as the only member of the top four cable providers to maintain subscriber growth.
According to Deadline, YouTube’s parent company, Google, is a massive corporation with a market capitalization in the trillions and numerous revenue streams. Negotiating partners of YouTube TV have cited this fact as a reason for difficulty in reaching amicable solutions.
Deadline has reported that NBCU first made viewers aware of the dispute last week, warning of potential blackouts and stating YouTube was “at it again”. This was not the first time YouTube had public disagreements, as there were almost blackouts of Fox and Paramount networks in the past. YouTube would eventually reach agreements with both companies after the information became public.
According to Deadline, the core disagreement between the companies has been over the integration of streaming platforms into the YouTube TV interface.
