According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC News is preparing to launch a new subscription-based service aimed at mobile video consumers as news organizations adapt to shifting viewer habits. With younger audiences increasingly favoring platforms like TikTok and YouTube, traditional TV networks are working to expand their digital presence.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Condé announced the plan at a summit hosted by Semafor in Washington on Thursday. While details remain limited, he stated that the service is set to debut in the fourth quarter and will complement NBC News’ existing streaming platforms, including NBC News Now and Today All Day. The company sees this move as a way to further engage audiences who prefer consuming news on their smartphones and tablets.
Designed as a mobile-first platform, the service will provide around two dozen live streams in both English and Spanish. It will also offer on-demand content from programs like Meet the Press, Today, Nightly News and Dateline, along with access to NBC News’ podcast archives.
The Hollywood Reporter also mentions that NBC News’ latest venture follows a similar move by CNN, which is also developing a subscription video service targeted at younger viewers. In January, CNN chief Mark Thompson announced plans for a digital streaming platform that would allow global subscribers to watch news content on any device. As competition in the digital news space grows, networks are increasingly investing in streaming services to attract and retain viewers who are moving away from traditional television.
Condé emphasized NBC News’ position as a leading provider of premium video content and suggested that the new service would build on that reputation, though he did not share additional specifics. He noted that as consumer habits evolve, NBC News is committed to delivering high-quality journalism in formats that align with modern viewing preferences.
