NBC Developing ‘Witchblade’ Reboot

NBC is diving back into the world of comics.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has given a script commitment to an adaptation of Marc Silvestri’s Witchblade comic from Carol Mendelsohn (CSI Series, Melrose Place) and Caroline Dries (The Vampire DiariesMelrose Place).

Witchblade, published by Top Cow comics and created by founder/owner Marc Silvestri, centers on homicide detective Sara Pezzini as she comes into possession of a supernatural bracelet called the Witchblade. An amulet passed down from remarkable woman to remarkable woman throughout history, the Witchblade helps Pezzini deal with the crimes and killers of San Francisco’s Mission District.

Dries, showrunner on CW’s The Vampire Diaries, will write the series and executive produce. She EPs with fellow Vampire Diaries writer/co-EP Brian Young, Mendelsohn, Silvestri, Matt Hawkins, Julie Weitz, Rick Jacobs and Dave Alpert. The series comes from Sony Pictures Television.

NBC has avoided comic book shows for a while after the failures of The Cape and Constantine, but recently the network has been getting back in the game with Witchblade and Powerless. Witchblade has been adapted for TV once before, back in 2001 when it ran for two seasons on TNT with Yancy Butler. The Witchblade property has also spawned an anime series, a manga series and a novel.
