Deadline reports that NBC and Universal Television are developing Taste, a new half-hour comedy series starring Emmy Award-winning actress Julie Bowen (Hailey’s on It!, American Dad!). The plot of the series is described as following the employees at a legacy food magazine in the Bay Area. When the publication is bought by a Silicon Valley tech mogul, its traditionalist editor, played by Bowen, is suddenly forced to work with a young, buzzy TikTok chef.
The series will be written and executive produced by Justin Shanes (Superstore, Nikki & Sara Live) and Nedaa Sweiss (The Drew Barrymore Show, Friends: The Reunion). Bowen will also executive produce through her Bowen and Sons Production banner, alongside the company’s president Rachael Field (Let’s Be Real, Outmatched) and Top Chef EP Gail Simmons (Star Plates, The Good Dish).
For her portrayal of Claire Dunphy in ABC’s hit series Modern Family, which ended its 11-year run in 2020, Bowen received two Emmy Awards. She can currently be seen in the comedy horror-thriller series Hysteria! on Peacock. Additional TV credits include ABC’s Boston Legal and NBC’s Ed. As for film, Bowen played Virginia Venit in Happy Gilmore, a role she will reprise in the 2025 sequel. More recently, she starred in the Warner Bros. film The Fallout and the Netflix movies Mixtape and Hubie Halloween. As director, Bowen helmed two episodes of Modern Family and the short film Girl Code starring Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Big City Greens). She is represented by CAA and Liberman Zerman Management.
Shanes is a co-executive producer on NBC and Universal Television’s St. Denis Medical. Previously, he was a writer on NBC and Universal Television’s Superstore for five seasons, as well as The Late Late Show with James Corden and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. His credits also include the animated children’s series Nature Cat and WordGirl, for which he won a Daytime Emmy. He is represented by TFC Management.
Sweiss was the showrunner for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, serving as the show’s head writer. Before that, Sweiss wrote for The Late Late Show with James Corden. In 2021, Sweiss was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. She is represented by UTA and attorney Todd Rubenstein.
Simmons is represented by WME, AGI Entertainment Media & Management and Abrams Garfinkel Margolis Bergson, LLP.
