NBC Casts Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia in Pilot by ‘Galavant’ Creator

Today, NBC announced Mandy Moore (TangledRed Band SocietyGrey’s Anatomy) and Milo Ventimiglia (HeroesGotham, The Whispers) will star in an untitled drama/comedy by Galavant creator, Dan Fogelman. In September, NBC won the untitled series in a bidding war. There has been no announcement as to when the show will premier or when we can expect a title, but the premise of the hour long dramedy follows a cast of characters who all share the same birthday.

Ventimiglia and Moore will play Jack and Rebecca who are happily married and have just moved to Pittsburg. Jack is described as an easygoing guy, and apparently Rebecca is very pregnant with triplets.

Joining Ventimiglia and Moore in the cast are Justin Hartley, Sterling Brown, and Ron Cephas Jones.  Hartley (Smallville, The Young and the Restless, Mistresses) is set to play Kevin, a successful television actor. Apparently, the good-looking Kevin has become bored with his status as a bachelor. Brown (Army Wives, American Crime Story) has been cast as the character Randall. Randall is a family man based in New York and is raising his two daughters with his wife, Beth. Jones (Half Nelson, Sweet and Lowdown, He Got Game) will be playing Randall’s father, William, who abandoned his infant son at a fire station.

With a set of characters such as these, we can’t help but wonder if the show will be more drama than comedy. The all-star cast and creator bode well for the series. Fogelman’s track record is impressive, and before leaving ABC studios last year he was pursued by several networks.  Fogelman is currently an executive producer for Grandfathered on Fox and created Galavant which premiered on NBC last January. Unlike Galavant, it doesn’t sound like there will be much singing in this new series, though.

Other than a few brief character descriptions, NBC and Fogelman have not offered much more about the new series. The untitled pilot is Fogelman’s first sale since his new deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Aside from being an executive producer for Grandfathered, Fogelman is reportedly also working on several other projects.

NBC hopes to film the pilot by the end of the year.
