According to Variety, Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is The New Black, Russian Doll) discussed the finale of season one and what may come in season two. This article may contain spoilers.
The Peacock mystery series debuted in January and quickly became a hit across the platform. Lyonne plays the lead protagonist, Charlie Cale, who “has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but investigate and solve,” via IMDB. The final episode of the first season introduced Emily Cale, portrayed by Clea DuVall (The Faculty, Argo), Charlie’s estranged sister who has always resented Charlie’s ability.
Lyonne said of the new addition: “For Clea and I, there’s this instant thing when you have a built-in backstory relationship that happens, we could just look at each other in that kitchen, and she just breaks my heart. For her to look at me and be disappointed in me, it’s so easy to drop into. I just love her so much that it just becomes so much more complex in a much more organic sense. You don’t have to go hunting for it in the same way.”
While the drama has already been renewed for second season, it is unknown whether DuVall will be returning to reprise her role. “Clea, she’s such a fucking heartbreaker. I mean, she’s devastating, she’s such a great actor,” said Lyonne, “Who knows if we’ll ever see that person again, but whether it’s Clea or Benjamin Bratt (Miss Congeniality, Coco), this is not the kind of show that has baked in DNA for a lot of recurring characters.”
The four-time Emmy nominee added that there is one actor that she hopes will star on the show: her fellow Orange Is The New Black costar and Emmy winner Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale, Blade Runner: Black Lotus). “Samira came to the premiere and then we went out with friends after and it was just me and her and a few other people. And she was like, ‘Just so you know, I would do one of these.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah?’ She was like, ‘Yeah, I know sometimes ask me to do things, maybe I don’t, but just so you know, this, I would do one of these.’ And I was like, ‘OK, Samira!’”
The possibility of Wiley appearing on the show is plausible, as no concrete plans for season two are in place, according to showrunner duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Prodigal Son): “We certainly have ideas. There’s a lot of stuff we wanted to do in Season 1 that we kind of put aside and said, we love this, but we’ll wait. The details are still being ironed out. It was such an early pickup, I don’t think anybody expected it so soon. So it’s a real exciting prospect… We’re so much more educated now on how to write this show and how to innovate on the form that I think when we go back and take a look at some of those worlds or characters or murders that we set aside, we might find fresh ways in. And we’ve seen this kind of formula works, messing around with different tones works, meeting new dastardly characters every week works. So I think we can go into Season 2 with a lot of confidence and a lot of creativity.”
