Naomi Watts Has Been Cast for ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel on HBO

Game of Thrones has earned its rightful place as one of the hottest shows on TV. The series carries through with its edgy, “on the end of our seats” writing and a great ensemble that has found an attachment with its fans. As Game of Thrones comes to an end next year, fans are scrambling for any bits of a sequel. Luckily, a prequel had been announced.

Although we do not know too much about the prequel, the news was out that Naomi Watts had been cast as a character in the pilot whose name has yet to be announced. As far as we know, she will play the role of a socialite with a dark secret.

The prequel is created by authors Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin – the latter who wrote Game of Thrones and also served as a co-executive producer for the TV series. The show will take place years and years before Game of Thrones’ setting, therefore, it will not have any of the current cast on it.

There will be supposedly five spin-offs of Games of Thrones with some as prequels. HBO Programming President Casey Bloys explains when some of those prequels will air: “They’re moving along,” he said. “We have some really talented writers working on them. The one thing I will tell you… any sort of pilot-to-series [order], there’s not going to be anything on our air for a least a year after Game of Thrones airs. We’re not using the final season to launch a new show or anything like that. There’s going to be a separation between the two.”

With Jane Goldman writing the story for this prequel, there’s a misconception that it will have a female lead. According to Bloys, that is not the case. “There are very strong female characters but it’s an ensemble, there are men and women,” he said. “Jane is a very good writer, we don’t want to limit her to writing female leads. There are a lot of very complicated leads in (the pilot).”

As for the prequel, Bloys gave us a look into the dark theme of the show. “It’s a very different setting, a very different time in Westeros, It will feel different but still Game of Thrones,” Bloys said in August.

No premiere date has been set.
