Multiple Marvel-Sony Shows Have Been Ordered at Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime just entered the Marvel Universe. According to Variety, orders have been made on Amazon for multiple live-action shows with the Marvel characters controlled by Sony.

Among those projects stands out a new Spider-verse show called Silk: Spider Society which Angela Kang (The Walking Dead, Terriers)  will develop. Among the show’s executive producers, there’s Phil Lord (The Afterparty, Bless the Harts) and Christopher Miller (Smallfoot, Solo: A Star Wars Story), who also worked as producers on the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Kang will also be an executive producer for the show which is part of her new multi-year television deal with Amazon. Former Sony boss Amy Pascal (Little Women, Venom) will also be an executive producer for Silk.

According to Variety, the Silk series and other Marvel-Sony shows were originally reported to be in pre-production in September 2020. Lauren Moon (Play the Hits, Good Trouble) was writing the show at the time, and in 2021 it was announced that Tom Spezialy (Chaos, The Leftovers) had joined the show as a showrunner which was part of his deal with Amazon.

It is still unknown which other Marvel characters Sony has access to will get their own series at Amazon, but Sony has the rights to over 900 characters from the Spider-Man franchise.

Over the years Sony has released multiple live-action Spider-Man films first, starring Tobey Maguire (The Great Gatsby, Brothers) and then, Andrew Garfield (tick, tick… Boom!, Hacksaw Ridge) in the reboot. Currently, Sony is working with Marvel Studios on the rebooted film franchise starring Tom Holland (Uncharted, Cherry) as the arachnid superhero. Sony also participated in the production of the Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which won best-animated film in 2019. There are two sequels in the works for the famous movie, one of which will premiere in June 2023.

Other live-action films that Sony has released related to the Spider-Universe include Venom and its sequel Let There Be Carnage starring Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) as the iconic Spider-Man villain. The other film released recently is Morbius starring Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, House of Gucci).

According to Variety, Silk: Spider Society is set to be released on MGM+’s linear channel in the United States and globally through Amazon Prime Video. The show follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman who was bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker. Moon escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family while she becomes the superhero known as Silk.
