MTV and Musical.ly Team Up for ‘My Super Sweet 16’ Casting Call

MTV is looking to revive its mid-2000s show My Super Sweet 16, and wants you to be apart of it!

Last year’s MTV Video Music Awards were a success in large part due to MTV’s partnership with the Musical.ly app. Over 900,000 fan videos were submitted toward the cable entertainment network’s 2016 Video Music Awards campaign, proving of the app’s ability to drive fan engagement with a large brand. This year, MTV hopes to emulate that achievement by partnering with the app, giving its fan users the chance to appear on a future episode of My Super Sweet 16.

The app is designed for its users to create and share short video loops of themselves lip syncing to popular music. Fans will be entered into the competition by including the hash tag #MySuperSweetAudition on their videos. From there, videos and their creators may be selected by My Super Sweet 16 producers and given an opportunity to appear on the show.

“MTV’s Musical.ly initiatives for the past year have helped build one of the most direct fan engagement programs on the platform,” said MTV, VH1 and Logo president Chris McCarthy to The Hollywood Reporter. “The casting for My Super Sweet 16 is just the beginning of engaging the muser audience more deeply into current and future MTV programming.”

One of the first major brands to join the mobile app, MTV is also the first to surpass 1 million fans on the app. This will also be the first time the network utilizes the app to audition for it’s original programming.

“There’s a huge overlap between the people they want to reach and that we are reaching right now,” says Alex Hofmann, president of North America at Musical.ly, of the partnership. “They’re doing a lot of cool things that, when we talk to our users, we know that they enjoy.”

The partnership means future MTV programming may be in the works for the app in the coming months.

My Super Sweet 16 will be revived for a 9th season, and has not seen new episodes since 2015.
