On Saturday, Mike & Molly actress, Rondi Reed, announced on Facebook that the upcoming season of the comedy on CBS will be the last. The sixth and final season is set to premiere in January. Reed plays Peggy, Mike’s mother in the series and stars alongside Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell. Back in March, CBS renewed the show for a full season of 22 episodes, but recently the show was trimmed to only 13 episodes and moved to the Wednesday night time slot with 2 Broke Girls. The trimming of the comedy’s episodes bode poorly for the long running CBS series, and now Reed has confirmed the sad fate of the show.
On her Facebook page, Reed said, “Before you hear it elsewhere (and some already have) this is the final and sixth season of Mike & Molly on CBS. It is also a shortened season (13 episodes) after the announced full renewal of 22 episodes back in March by the network.” Reed also wrote that they will be done taping the show as of Jan 26. She claimed, “The network has it’s reasons, and I will not get into a debate, discussion, or campaign to get them to change their minds. Other venues were explored by WB and Bonanza Productions (Chuck Lorre) after CBS announced their intentions, but did not turn up a future for our show.” Reed called the cancellation a fact which the cast and crew have known about for weeks. Reed ended her post by saying she is “extremely grateful to have been a part of this and to have worked with a fabulous bunch of folks over the years. I have learned a lot about many things, including the Business we call Show. Also grateful for all the fans and for the personal support I have received over the (almost) 6 seasons. Stewart Talent has guided me every step of the way on this journey and for that I am also forever grateful.”
CBS has not issued a response yet or commented on Reed’s announcement.
The sixth and final season of Mike and Molly premieres on Jan. 6.
