Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex, The Queen) has provided fans of the Prime Video fantasy-comedy series Good Omens with an update on the show’s hotly-anticipated finale, courtesy of an interview last week obtained via Deadline. The announcement comes almost two years after season two of the modern pastiche of the New Testament ended on a cliffhanger, and one year after Prime Video revealed the show’s final season would be truncated into a single 90-minute episode in response to a berth of sexual misconduct allegations against writer/showrunner Neil Gaiman.
“It’s not up to me,” Sheen told Doctor Who executive producer Jane Tranter as part of an interview for this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival, according to Deadline. “I’m not in control but the episode is made and hopefully the people will enjoy it as and when.”
As further evidenced by Sheen’s comments, the fate of Good Omens has been stuck in limbo since creator Neil Gaiman exited the series during pre-production of season three following allegations of sexual misconduct from at least eight different women (via the BBC). As Gaiman is responsible for writing the original 1990 Good Omens novel (along with departed author Terry Pratchett) as well as both seasons of its television adaptation, many fans have speculated that parent company Prime Video is unsure of how to release the show’s finale without inviting associations with its controversial showrunner.
Leading Good Omens alongside Sheen’s well-mannered angel Aziraphile is David Tennant (Doctor Who, Jessica Jones), who plays the sardonic and foul-mouthed demon Crowley. Tennant himself commented on the change of plans earlier this year, telling The Independent that “there’s been a slight rejig with the personnel. But we still get to tell that story – I think it would have been very difficult to leave it on a cliffhanger. So I’m glad that’s been worked out.”
In his interview with Deadline, Sheen expressed his gratitude that Good Omens had given him an opportunity to become friends with Tennant, who he had previously considered a rival due to the competitive nature of auditioning. “When people talk about having chemistry, you just feel very lucky. We both feel the same way about making a scene work as well as possible. And to see what Good Omens means to the fandom, well I still get very moved.”
The series finale of Good Omens will be released on Prime Video on an unspecified date, while seasons one and two are streaming now.
