Michael Cudlitz Says an Abraham Return On-Screen is “Very Possible” in AMC’s ‘Walking Dead’ Universe

The Walking Dead fans will remember that grueling Negan introduction scene in season seven that led to the Lucille-head bashing deaths of Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz). Since then, Cudlitz had returned to the sets with his directorial debut in season nine’s “Stradivarius.” This clearly wasn’t going to be the last time for the actor to sit in the director’s chair. Cudlitz came back to direct two upcoming episodes for season 10.

Although Cudlitz now has “director” on his resume, he will always be known for his role as Abraham on the show. Recently, a possible on-screen return for Abraham didn’t seem to be too far-fetched.

“I don’t know. The show has sort of laid out in its history, the way they tell stories, is through flashbacks and origin stories,” explained Cudlitz. “There’s still characters on the show that were very close with Abraham that he had history with. So we could very easily go back.”

While sitting down with some of the newest additions to Fear the Walking Dead – a spinoff of the flagship show – Cudlitz pointed out an easter egg that fans might have spotted.

“Who knows, maybe there’ll be flashbacks? I guess on your guys’ show, there were some tapes that were shown and one of the tapes said ‘Abe-slash-Doctor,’ which would be Abraham Ford and Doctor Eugene Porter according to [creator] Robert Kirkman, so they could certainly go down that road,” Cudlitz said.

Those tapes that Cudlitz is referring to have one in particular where Althea (Maggie Grace) is interviewing Abraham and Eugene (Josh McDermitt) on video. Fear the Walking Dead teased a prior friendship between Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades) and Abraham. According to an ongoing rumor, a movie with these two characters isn’t out of the question.

“They’re also doing other movies, which are gonna move through time — go back in time, go forward in time — and I believe pair up characters that weren’t necessarily paired up in the graphic novels,” Cudlitz said. “It’s a strong, subtle yes. Very, very possible.”
