Showtime’s latest teaser for Dexter sees the former Bay Harbor Butcher transform into a friendly neighborhood sales associate named Jim Lindsay. The teaser, entitled “Around Town,” is the second from the upcoming series that ends with foreboding omen that Dexter Morgan may soon return to his murderous ways.
While the first teaser, “Misunderstood,” took fans back to the woods where the original run of the series came to its jarring and critically-panned finale, this latest teaser grants insight into how Dexter has established new life and identity in a small town. Tuesday, the day before the teaser aired, the official Dexter Twitter page from Showtime introduced fans to Jim Lindsay with an employee badge for the sales associate at Fred’s Fish and Game. The following upbeat teaser showed the Michael C. Hall’s (Six Feet Under) Jim Lindsay is cherished member of his community, but ends with a longing glance into a window knife display that indicates Dexter Morgan and his Dark Passenger may not be far behind.
Among Dexter’s all-new cast, Michael Cyril Creighton (Spotlight, Game Night) has been cast as Fred Jr., a role that now has more context thanks to Showtime’s latest teaser, via UPROXX. Collider finds this new small-town identity perfect fit for Dexter Morgan “when we consider his experience in killing living things.” Fans have yet to see Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) in action as the one-off season’s main villain, who may be the impetuous for Dexter to return to his killer habits.
E! Online believes that Dexter’s new alias, Jim Lindsay, may be a nod to author Jeff Lindsay, who wrote the Darkly Dreaming Dexter series that provided the inspiration for the Emmy-nominated series. Dexter is Dead, the eighth and most-recent installment in the crime series, was published two-years after the Showtime series’ finale.
While two short teasers have been all Dexter fans have glimpsed from the series thus far, UPROXX asserts that “it’s pretty damn clear that this series is the most anticipated revival/reboot of recent times.” This is credited to the fact that the majority of fans were disappointed in how the original series concluded and thus see this continuation from Showtime as chance to salvage the show’s legacy. According to Collider, many see the return of showrunner Clyde Phillips (Dexter, Nurse Jackie) and the commitment to tell a succinct ten-episode story as positive signs for the Dexter revival.
When the first teaser was released, Showtime confirmed that Dexter would return in time for the fall television season, though a specific date has yet to be provided.
