Tomorrow, Mayans MC will air its season two finale on FX. Today, FX announced that the show would continue for another season. Elgin James, co-creator and co-executive producer, will be the showrunner for the third season. In a statement to Deadline, the President of Original Programming at FX, Nick Grad, said, “We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans MC with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner.”
Mayans MC is a spinoff of the series Sons of Anarchy. It is one of the FX originals that is broadening diversity at the network. Other shows in that category includes Atlanta, Pose, Snowfall, and What We Do in the Shadows.
It comes as no surprise that James has been tapped to be the showrunner for the new season. During the season two premiere of the show Kurt Stutter, co-creator, and creator of Sons of Anarchy, announced that he would be stepping back from the project to allow James to lead more. “If we are lucky enough to have a season 3, I will be stepping back as day to day showrunner and handing the reins to my talented and passionate partner, Elgin James.”
Mayans MC was in the headlines in October when Stutter was fired from the show. Based on complaints from the cast and crew, Stutter was let go by FX after an eighteen-year relationship. Stutter told Deadline that departure, “At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand.”
In an interview with Deadline a week after his dismal, Stutter talked highly of his fellow co-creator and the show, “It has the potential to be a more significant show than Sons ever was, no disrespect to that mythology. But it’s just a different world right now, and I think those stories can be important to tell.”
Mayans MC will return in fall of 2020.
